Weinstein Co. under investigation by New York court on sexual harassment charges
Tuesday, October 24th, 2017 11:09:45 by fatimaarshadFollowing the allegations made by several Hollywood actresses on producer Harvey Weinstein, the New York attorney general has opened an investigation into sexual harassment and possible violations of civil rights laws at the Weinstein Company. The movie studio, which was co-founded by Harvey Weinstein, was sent a subpoena on Monday.
The subpoena requests information regarding how each complaint related to sexual harassment or other discrimination was handled by the Weinstein Company. It also asks for management’s criteria for hiring, promoting, casting, rejecting or terminating applicants or employees.
According to the details provided, the subpoena has not been made public and it is part of an investigation into whether executives at the company violated state civil rights or New York City human rights laws.
“No New Yorker should be forced to walk into a workplace ruled by sexual intimidation, harassment, or fear. … If sexual harassment or discrimination is pervasive at a company, we want to know,” a statement by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman — emailed from the attorney general’s office in response to a request for comment on the investigation — said.
Harvey Weinstein came under fire after famous Hollywood actress Alyssa Milano accused him of assaulting her and later started a campaign on social media titled #MeToo, in which she asked women from around the world to share whether they had ever been assaulted.
Following these allegations, several other celebrities also came forward accusing Weinstein of assaulting or harassing them. He was later fired from the company so that it does not suffer due to his tarnished reputation.
Weinstein has denied having non-consensual sexual activity with anyone.
