Uncles convicted of raping 10-year-old niece in India
Wednesday, November 1st, 2017 11:24:13 by fatimaarshadTwo Indian men were convicted on Tuesday for raping their 10-year-old niece, who gave birth to a baby earlier this month. The young girl was denied an abortion by India’s top court and gave to give birth, according to the local media.
It has been reported that the girl was 30 weeks pregnant when her case was brought to the court in July. The incident took place in the northwestern city of Chandigarh and the court turned down her abortion plea because the pregnancy had progressed too far.
According to the Indian law, pregnancy cannot be terminated after 20 weeks unless the mother’s life is in danger. It appears that the girl did not know she was pregnant and was even kept unaware of the fact that she delivered a baby girl in August. Her parents had told her that she was undergoing stomach surgery to remove a stone. As soon as the baby was delivered, she was put up for adoption.
On Tuesday, a court in India found two of the girl’s uncles, both brothers, guilty of raping her. Their sentences are set for later this week.
Initially, the girl told the police and child welfare activist that she had been raped several times over recent months by her first uncle, who is in his 40s.
However, after the baby was born, her DNA did not match with that uncle which led the police to look for more suspects. Ultimately, the first suspect’s brother was found to be the father of the baby as their DNA matched.
An increasing number of such cases have come to the courts in recent years with as many as 10,854 cases of child rape reported in India in 2015, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.
