New York attacker found to be linked to ISIS

New York saw one of the worst terrorist attacks since the September 11, 2001, Twin Tower attack and now it has been learnt that the man behind it was a radicalized Muslim and linked to the terror group Islamic State or ISIS.

The suspect belonged from Uzbekistan and he had moved to the United States back in 2010. It has been learnt that he was radicalized after moving to the US.

The driver took a rented truck and mowed down pedestrians and cyclists over a mile-long stretch of a bike path on Lower Manhattan’s West Side, which is a posh area of New York City. At the time of the incident, children and their parents were preparing to celebrate Halloween on Tuesday afternoon.

The 29-year-old suspect, Sayfullo Saipov, crashed his truck into a school bus and was trying to flee when the police shot him in the abdomen. He remains in custody and is expected to survive the shooting.

“He’s a depraved coward is what he is, and he was associated with ISIS, and he was radicalized domestically,” New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo told CNN.

The governor confirmed “a note that referenced ISIS” was found at the scene. US media said it was written in Arabic and pledged allegiance to the militant group. Saipov also reportedly shouted “God is greatest”.

“After he came to the United States is when he started to become informed about ISIS and radical tactics,” Cuomo told CNN.

“We have no evidence yet of associations or a continuing plot or associated plots, and our only evidence to date is that this was an isolated incident that he himself performed.”

According to the details provided, Saipov initially lived in Florida and Ohio, before settling in Paterson which is a former industrial hub in New Jersey about 20 miles northeast of New York City. The suspect lived there with his wife and two children.

Meanwhile security has been beefed up in the city and citizens continue to go about their normal lives.
