Japan’s ‘Black Widow’ sentenced to death for poisoning lovers, taking their money
Tuesday, November 7th, 2017 5:21:32 by fatimaarshadJapan’s notorious millionaire granny dubbed ‘Black Widow’, who used to trick elderly lovers into making her beneficiary in insurance payouts and later poisoning them, has been sentenced to death in Japan on Tuesday.
Kyoto District Court handed out the sentence to Chisako Kakehi, 70, for the murder of three men—including a husband—and for the attempted murder of another. The sentence ended a long and high-profile trial that has made headlines in the country.
According to the details provided, Kakehi used to poison her victims by making them drink a poisonous compound, drawing comparisons with the spider that kills its mates after copulation.
“The accused made the victims drink a cyanide compound with a murderous intention in all four cases,” Judge Ayako Nakagawa told the court, according to public broadcaster NHK.
“The cases were well prepared in advance. They were cunning and malicious. I have no choice but to impose the ultimate penalty.”
Kakehi used to befriend wealthy and mostly elderly and sick men who did not have any children. She would then trick them into making her the beneficiary of their insurance payouts and later kill them using cyanide which she had kept hidden in a plant pot at her home.
Kakehi’s defense lawyers pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the charges on the ground that Kakehi was not criminally liable because she was suffering from dementia.
More than 560 people queued for 51 seats in the courtroom to witness the outcome of the marathon trial, which lasted 135 days.
It was the second-longest court case involving a jury since Japan introduced a joint judge-jury system in 2009.
