Illegal poaching of endangered species increases after influx of Chinese in Pakistan

Two men were recently caught selling crocodile meat in Kabirwala tehsil of the southern Punjab district of Khanewal, just days after a gang of poachers were arrested from the same area for hunting tortoises. In both the cases, the men were selling the meat to Chinese nationals.
The two men arrested have been identified as Muhammad Akram and Mazhar, who belong to Shujabad area. They were produced before the court on Tuesday and were sentenced to jail time and were also imposed a fine of Rs10,000 each.
The Punjab Wildlife Department had arrested both the poachers in the Sarai Sidhu area of Kabirwala and initiated appropriate action against them. They were handed over to the police and relevant cases were registered.
Chinese people consume crocodile and tortoise meat as a part of their diet. These meats are consumed for their special nutritional and medicinal benefits.
According to health experts, crocodile meat cures skin problem, builds muscle, prevents heart diseases, prevents asthma, prevents diabetes, and maintains lower cholesterol, among other things.
In an earlier incident, two poachers were arrested for illegally selling tortoise meat to Chinese nationals in Khanewal. These poachers were arrested while they were shooting tortoises in Sarai Sidhu area. When they were searched, they were found to be in possession of 50 kilogram of the animal’s meat.
