Islamabad police unable to nab suspects in Australian woman’s mugging case

Two weeks after an Australian woman was robbed at gunpoint, the Islamabad police are still unable to arrest the suspect. The incident took place at the capital’s posh Super Market area, which is always under heavy security.

The woman who got robbed has been identified as Jennifer Isobel McKay, who was robbed at around 7:20 pm on the evening of October 22, when unidentified gunmen pressed a pistol to her head and grabbed her handbag.

“I was robbed in my car at gunpoint in the car park of Sector F-6 Super Market at 7:20pm. They put a gun to my head and grabbed my handbag and ran,” Mckay maintained in her application to the police. The handbag, she said, contained $250 and around Rs10,000.

A case against the unnamed suspects was registered on the same day by the Kohsar police, however, they still have not been able to identify and track down the suspects. The police officials say that they have gotten a footage in which they can see a man robbing McKay, but the footage is not clear enough to identify the man.

Interestingly, in McKay’s case, police have registered a theft case — Section 382 (theft) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) — rather than of an armed robbery — Section 392 (robbery) of the PPC — in the FIR even though the woman clearly mentioned in her application that she was mugged at gunpoint.

When contacted, an official said that the video shows that the man did not use a weapon and McKay’s claim of multiple men robbing her is also false as only one man could be seen snatching her bag.

This is not the first time that a foreigner has been robbed in the upscale F-6 area as a Canadian and French nationals were also mugged earlier this year.
