Egyptian singer gets jailed for obscene video
Wednesday, November 22nd, 2017 5:03:05 by fatimaarshadAn Egyptian singer was jailed for four days for a video which she released online last week. She was detained and released pending further questioning after her performance in a music video unleashed a huge public outcry in a conservative country.
According to the details provided, the singer Shaima Ahmad, whose artistic name is Shyma, was taken into custody on November 18 from her house which is located in Al Nuzah area of Cairo. The action was taken after several legal complaints were lodged against her with the country’s top prosecutor.
In Shyma’s latest single called ‘I have Problems’, the sultry singer can be seen doing some provocative moves while shedding items of her clothing. She is acting as a school teacher in the video for young male students, and is also seen enticing them with fruits.
Shyma now faces charges of inciting debauchery and corrupting public morals in the video that has already received millions of views.
Meanwhile the video’s critics say that the content is full of sexual innuendos and is morally depraving. In her defense, Shyma blamed the director of the video, Muhammad Jamal for the provocative content.
“I was a tool in the hands of the director, who guided my movements and requested me to do some displays,” she was quoted as telling investigators.
Prosecutors later ordered the arrest of the director.
“The content of the video clip is harmful to the Egyptian society,” Jalal Awara, a member of the parliament, said. “There must be a firm stance against promoters of this substandard art,” he added in media remarks.
If convicted, Shyma may face up to three years in prison.
