YouTube increases vigilance over children’s content
Thursday, November 23rd, 2017 3:51:41 by fatimaarshadYouTube is known to be an open platform where anyone can upload anything as long as it complies with the company’s guidelines for safe content. Despite the guidelines provided, there is a still a grey area and the dangers it possesses to impressionable children is very grave.
According to the latest news, YouTube has stepped up enforcement of its guidelines for videos aimed at children after the company received major backlash for not doing enough to monitor its content. Many parents are concerned that children are easily able to get their hands on adult content while they are watching their own videos. In addition to that, seemingly harmless children’s videos also contain some very dangerous messages.
According to sources, the streaming video service has removed more than 50 user channels in the last week and has also stopped running ads on over 3.5 million videos since June. The vice president of the company, Johanna Wright responded to the criticism the company has been receiving through a blog post.
“Across the board, we have scaled up resources to ensure that thousands of people are working around the clock to monitor, review and make the right decisions across our ads and content policies,” Wright said. “These latest enforcement changes will take shape over the weeks and months ahead as we work to tackle this evolving challenge.”
Concerns about children’s videos gained new force in the last two weeks after reports in BuzzFeed and the New York Times and an online essay by British writer James Bridle pointed out questionable clips.
It is being hoped that with these new and improved measures, YouTube can soon become a safe platform for children.
