Needle marks on Kindergarten toddlers worry parents in China

A nationwide investigation was launched into the alleged abuse of toddlers at different Kindergarten schools in China. The concern was raised by worried parents who saw needle marks on their children and also learnt that they were force-fed mysterious pills at the school.

The RYB Education New World kindergarten was the latest school to come under the scrutiny of the investigating officers as parents there complained of these issues. The bilingual Chinese-English nursery has several branches in all the major cities of China and its shares are also publicly traded on the New York stock exchange. After the scandal emerged, its shares fell by more than 40 percent.

China’s official Xinhua news agency said children were also “reportedly sexually molested” but gave no further details.

A mother of a three-year-old toddler girl told the reporters that her daughter had not been abused but there were other children who had been coerced into taking pills.

“Other kids were saying it’s not to be called taking a pill, but a reward. And the pill is not to be called a pill, but a jelly bean, and is a little secret between the child and the teacher,” Li said.

She chose to bring her daughter to school on Friday because she trusted the girl’s teacher, but admitted: “I still feel a bit uneasy.”

The incident prompted the education steering committee of China’s State Council, its top administrative body, to call for an “immediate” investigation into kindergartens across the country.

“Lately, many places have had incidents where children have been violated and harmed in kindergartens, which has had an abominable impact and caused major harm to their families,” it said in a circular published on the Ministry of Education’s official website.

So far it is not clear what the experimentation is supposed to do but the investigations hope to uncover what the children were made to take and why.
