Disability Movement in Pakistan distances itself from Muniba Mazari after ex-husband sues her
Monday, December 11th, 2017 1:36:00 by fatimaarshadMuniba Mazari has been an inspiration to many—having lost her legs in a fatal car crash—she did not give up on life and continues to live it at its fullest, also motivating others.
However, it appears that the television host and United Nations goodwill ambassador has found herself in the center of a controversy as her ex-husband has sued her for defamation. He claims that Mazari is using wrong facts to garner sympathy from people and defaming him in the process.
In another case, Mazari has also been accused of plagiarizing another artist’s work.
Even though the TV host has posted an emotional response to these accusations on her Facebook account, it appears that the fallout from these cases has already begun.
The disability movement in Pakistan has decided to disassociate itself from her.
Muhammad Atif Sheikh, president Special Talent Exchange Program (STEP), a DPO (Disabled People Organization) to advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities said, “Muniba is presenting a model of sympathy as an ambassador. We don’t want to quote names or hinder her efforts but she isn’t doing anything for the disability movement and is merely cashing in on her disability.
He continued, “She is trying to get attention using the charity model of disability, which is entirely wrong and isn’t what a representative should do.”
Sheikh further stated Mazari was also demonizing the name of the country by showing that men don’t respect women in Pakistan which wasn’t the truth. “She shouldn’t be an ambassador of disability for any organization because a representative/ambassador always advocates the right-based approach and equality, not try to gain sympathy. Disability is a diversified way of living, not a brave struggle.”
In the same way several other DPO organizations have also distanced themselves from the celebrity saying she isn’t doing anything for the cause and only using her disability to cash in on.
