Sushma Swaraj still desperate to find Geeta’s missing family
Thursday, December 21st, 2017 1:11:18 by fatimaarshadGeeta, the deaf and mute Indian girl who wandered into Pakistan over 15 years ago, is still waiting for her family to show up.
India’s Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj has been on a mission to ensure Geeta’s reunion with her family. On Wednesday, Swaraj posted Geeta’s diary notes on her Twitter account and asked people for help in identifying the dialect in order to ascertain the area that she is from.
“Geeta was rescued from Pakistan. She cannot speak or hear. We have obtained some pages from Pakistan written by her in a local dialect and in Devanagari script,” the minister tweeted.
This is the second time in a couple of months that Swaraj has taken to social media to seek help for Geeta.
In October, she announced a reward for INR100,000 (approximately $1,500) for assistance in reuniting Geeta with her family.
When Geeta was around 10-years-old, she was found by the Rangers sitting in Samjhauta Express at the Lahore train station. She was all alone and due to her inability to talk, she could not explain to the officials where her family went.
She was handed to the Edhi Foundation in 2003, after several attempts of placing her in shelter homes failed. Builquis Edhi took Geeta under her wing and she was safely handed over to the Indian authorities in 2015.
However, Geeta’s story still awaits a happy ending as her real family is still not found and she continues to live in government shelter in India.
