A man mowed down pedestrians with his car in a busy area in Melbourne, injuring several people, before being forced out of his car by a police officer.

The incident took place on Thursday and so far it is not being related to any terror activity. The suspect attributed his actions to ‘perceived mistreatment of Muslims’. The suspect driver has been identified as a 32-year-old Australian-Afghan who came to the country as a refugee. He has a history of drug abuse and mental problems and the incident is being treated as an isolated crime.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnball assured his nation that the incident has no links to terrorism ‘at this stage’.

“To be attacked like this, in the middle of one of our great cities, is a shocking event, a shocking crime,” Turnbull said.

Turnball said that there were nine foreign nationals who were also injured during the incident including three South Korean tourists.

Melbourne´s Herald Sun said the other victims came from China, Italy, India, Venezuela, Ireland, and New Zealand, with the city full of tourists for the festive season.

The suspect was wrestled out of his car by an off-duty police officer and he is scheduled to undergo a psychiatric assessment today.

Australia has come under attack by refugees in the recent months. In January, a man rammed his car into pedestrians in Melbourne’s busiest mall, killing six people. The driver’s case is still being heard in court and it was reported that he was also a drug addict.
