India accuses Pakistan of harassing Jadhav’s family during visit
Wednesday, December 27th, 2017 12:53:43 by fatimaarshadInstead of thanking Pakistan for letting Kulbushan Jadhav meet his family, the country has accused Pakistan of harassing the members during the visit. On Tuesday, India said that the meeting was held in an ‘atmosphere of coercion’.
Jadhav’s mother and wife flew in from New Delhi on Monday to meet with Jadhav at the Foreign Office (FO) in Islamabad. This was the first meeting with his family since his arrest in Balochistan last year on charges of espionage and terrorism.
“It appears that Jadhav was under considerable stress and speaking in an atmosphere of coercion,” the Indian foreign ministry said in a statement shortly after top Indian officials debriefed his family in New Delhi.
The ministry alleged that Jadhav’s conversation during the meeting was “tutored and designed to perpetuate the false narrative of his alleged activities in Pakistan.”
India also accused Pakistan of harassing Jadhav’s family as they were asked to go through strict security checks. New Delhi said that Pakistan disrespected the cultural and religious sensibilities of Jadhav’s family as they were asked to change their clothes and shoes, and that his wife was also ordered to remove her ‘mangal sutra’, which is a necklace worn by married Hindu women.
The meeting between Jadhav and his family lasted for 40 minutes and they were made to speak through a transparent glass wall. An Indian diplomat was also present during the meeting who was not allowed to talk to the prisoner or listen to the conversations with his family.
Jadhav was captured from Balochistan last year and he later confessed to spying for Indian intelligence agency RAW. He was found guilty in a closed trial by a military court and sentenced to death on charges of espionage and terrorism.
India took the case to the International Court of Justice which suspended his execution until it passes final judgment in the case.
