Lactalis baby milk company initiates major recall after salmonella scare
Wednesday, December 27th, 2017 1:56:16 by fatimaarshadFrench company which produces baby milk products has initiated a major product recall from the world over after it was found out that milk produced by the dairy giant was contaminated with salmonella virus.
French prosecutors have opened a probe into the salmonella contamination case and the investigation will focus on possible charges of causing involuntary injuries and endangering the lives of others. In addition to these charges, the probe will also focus on possible cheating and failures in carrying out a product recall.
Lactalis produces powdered milk for infants and toddlers which is sold under several different brand names in France and other countries around the world, including Picot and Milumel. The company is one of the world’s largest producers of dairy products with reach as far as China and Pakistan.
The cases of salmonella poisoning first emerged in early December when reports of some 20 children falling sick after consuming the milk product. The company ordered first major recall on December 10 of nearly 7,000 tonnes of packets produced by a contaminated factory in Craon, northwest of France.
At the time, it said it did not know how much of the potentially dangerous powder had been consumed or was in shops around the world and it announced a second, wider recall on December 21.
The group has now recalled all of its production from the Craon factory since February 15, blaming the contamination on renovation work carried out earlier this year.
So far the company has not released its comments on the situation.
