Woman gang-raped in Faisalabad for marrying of her own choice
Thursday, December 28th, 2017 9:48:31 by fatimaarshadA woman was gang-raped in Faisalabad on the orders of a local panchayat for the sole reason that she married out of her own free will instead of her parent’s.
The incident took place in Chak 429 village of Tandlianwala district near Faisalabad in Punjab and since then it has shocked many people of the area.
According to the details provided, a woman married a man of her choice three months ago. However, the village elders did not approve of this marriage and in order to make an example out of her, they convened to arrive at a decision to punish her.
The elders called up a panchayat which decided that the woman should be gang-raped. Three members of that council then proceeded to gang-rape her.
The woman further said that after the incident she went to the local police to register a case, but they did not do that and instead sent her home.
Meanwhile, the station house officer at the local police station claimed that the victim has yet to approach them with her complaint.
Incidents of violence initiated on the orders of panchayat are on the rise.
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has reported an average of 650 “honour” killings annually over the past decade. But since most go unreported, the real number is likely to be much higher.
Efforts are being made to make such crimes punishable by law so that they can be discouraged. Sadly, most of the times the police does not want to interfere in such matters hence justice is never served.
