Lahore’s Mall Road to be closed for three months for Orange Line metro project

One of Lahore’s main arteries, the Mall Road will be closed for traffic for three months so that work on the most critical part of Orange Line Metro Train (OLMT) project, can be completed. This part of the project will consist of a three-story underground Central Station near General Post Office (GPO) on the Mall Road.
Work on the OLMT station started after a delay of 22 months. Authorities have decided to close the Mall Road for a minimum of three months so that the cut and cover section of the metro train can be completed.
Work on the station was started on Sunday, however, authorities asked that the Mall Road should not be closed on Monday as work needs to be done on alternate roads as they are not in good shape. It has been learnt that Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) recently worked on the sanitation project on the alternate roads, with some potholes still open, causing a hindrance in traffic.
OMLT project-1 contractor, Shahid Saleem, talked to reporters telling them that work on the project resumed after taking precautionary measures as directed by the Supreme Court. Construction activity near all heritage sites has already started but only after the company took all measures to ensure that these sites remain protected.
The company has installed scaffolding to give support to historical sites’ structures, he said. Metal sheets and green shade cloth have also been put on historical buildings to preserve their structure, he added.
As per the alternative traffic plan, traffic coming from Lower Mall will be diverted to Napier Road which will come on the Mall Road after Lahore High Court Chowk. Similarly, traffic coming from Regal Chowk will be diverted to Fane Road from where it will go to Lower Mall.
