Pakistan-US relations strain further after Trump’s tweet
Tuesday, January 2nd, 2018 12:20:46 by fatimaarshadUnited States President Donald Trump is known for using Twitter to speak his mind and recently he lambasted Pakistan for not doing enough to fight terrorism.
On Monday, Trump tweeted that the US ‘foolishly’ gave aid to Pakistan over the course of 15 years and all it got in return from Islamabad was ‘deceit and lies’.
“The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies and deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools. They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!,” Trump said in his tweet.
As expected, Pakistan did not take the tweet well and leaders from several political parties spoke up against Trump for his harsh words.
The Pakistan Foreign Office summoned the US Ambassador to Pakistan, David Hale on Monday night in order to lodge its protest against Trump’s tweet.
The US Embassy confirmed that Ambassador Hale was summoned by the Foreign Office at 9pm.
Sources said Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua sought an explanation from the ambassador over the American president’s tweet.
Just last week, the Pakistan Army rejected the Trump administration’s pressure to do more in the fight against terrorism. Last week, Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor said that Pakistan would not accept any further US demands.
The US has been putting immense pressure on Pakistan to step up its efforts against fighting terrorists. However, the mistrust between both the countries is increasing with every passing day.
