Government to shut down illegally constructed marriage halls in Lahore
Thursday, January 4th, 2018 5:20:56 by fatimaarshadIt appears that marriage halls in Lahore will face the wrath of the government as it has been decided that more than 100 illegally constructed marriage halls in Lahore will be shut down.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) heard a suo moto case regarding this issue and following its decision, the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) has suddenly declared that all marriage halls in the city are illegal save for nine which have been recently constructed.
The owners of these illegal marriage halls have been given an ultimatum of 30 days to cancel all events booked beyond the deadline of January 31. The LDA has also warned citizens to make alternative arrangements if they have mistakenly booked their function in any of the blacklisted marriage halls.
In order for the citizens to ensure that they do not book the illegal marriage halls, the LDA has issued lists of approved and unapproved marriage halls on its website and the same has been circulated among citizens on mass media.
The list shows that only nine marriage halls are legal, while 151 others are all unapproved.
Considering the number of marriages which take place on a daily basis in the city, these approved marriage halls are expected to face a lot of load. Moreover, if the illegal marriage halls are shut down, hundreds of people are expected to lose their jobs.
The fate of the illegal marriage halls has also not been decided. At this point it is not clear whether these places will be demolished or if they will be given some margin to operate.
