Plane skids off runway, plunges towards sea in Turkey
Monday, January 15th, 2018 11:38:06 by fatimaarshadA plane carrying 168 people on-board skidded off a runway of a Turkish coastal airport and plunged down a steep slope, heading towards the sea on Sunday morning. The incident took place at the Black Sea city of Trabzon, causing panic in the area.
The Pegasus Airlines flight had landed upon its journey from Ankara and after landing safely, the plane just skidded off the runway and plunged towards the sea. Thankfully the plane got stuck in mud, and it did not fall into the sea, which was just a few meters ahead.
None of the 168 people on the plane got hurt, but there was a lot of panic as people thought that the plane would either catch fire or fall into the sea.
According to one of the passengers named Fatma Gordu, there was a loud noise and all of a sudden, the plane was hanging on the edge.
“We tilted on the side and the front of the plane went down and the back of went up,” she said. “There was a huge panic, people were shouting.”
When the plane came to a halt in thick mud, passengers smelt fuel.
“We thought there would be fire,” Gordu said. “People panicked – there were pregnant women and children.”
Fire crew were immediately called to the scene and they immediately started pumping water over the plane.
“It was a miracle,” said another passenger, Yuksel Gordu. “We could have burned, we could have exploded or we could have gone into the sea.”
The governor of Trabzon, Yucel Yavuz, told reporters that all the passengers were safely boarded off the plane and some had gone to the hospital as a precaution only.
Pegasus Airlines said in a statement that the Boeing 737-800 aircraft “had a runway excursion incident” as it landed but the 162 passengers, two pilots and four cabin crew were unhurt.
