SSP Rao Anwar refuses to appear before probe team
Monday, January 22nd, 2018 1:44:34 by fatimaarshadThe Suspended Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rao Anwar announced on Monday that he will not be appearing before the investigative committee which is probing the Naqeebullah fake encounter case.
The SSP is facing an inquiry into the extrajudicial murder of a South Waziristan native by the name of Naqeebullah Mehsud. The police officer had alleged that Naqeebullah was a terrorist but these claims could not be verified. In fact, Naqeebullah’s relatives claimed that he had no ties with the terrorist group and was innocent.
The deceased was picked up by policemen in civilian clothes from a tea shop in Karachi’s Sohrab Goth area on January 3. The alleged fake encounter took place on January 13 in Shah Latif Town in which Mehsud was killed along with four suspected terrorists.
Anwar, while talking to media personnel over the telephone, said that there is no point in appearing before the probe team as he believes that there is no hope of justice. He alleged that there is a propaganda hatching against him and dismissed the claims that he unlawfully held people under his custody. He claimed that he is just facing a one-sided inquiry.
Anwar said that a few days back Sindh IG AD Khawaja announced Rs0.2 million award for police officials behind a shootout at Shahrah-e-Faisal, but later the police encounter turned questionable.
“Does it mean IG Sindh was involved in the killing,” questioned Anwar.
Meanwhile a raid was carried out at Anwar’s resident by the police but he was not found there. Two people present at the residence were taken into custody.
Anwar’s name has also been placed on Exit Control List (ECL) along with the names of other officers involved in the inquiry.
