Indian man dies after being sucked into MRI machine
Tuesday, January 30th, 2018 9:22:36 by fatimaarshadAn Indian man died in a freak accident at a Mumbai hospital on Saturday, after he got sucked into an MRI machine. The incident is creating waves in India for its unusual nature and the culprits responsible for it have been arrested.
According to the details of the incident provided, a 32-year-old man named Rajesh Maru, carried a metallic oxygen tank into the room which had an MRI machine, and the machine sucked the machine in alongside the man.
Maru’s relatives are now blaming the staff at Bai Yaminabai Laxman Nair Charitable Hospital for their ‘massive negligence’ which led to Maru’s death. They claim that the ward boy was responsible for leaving the MRI machine on, which ultimately became the cause of his death.
Maru was tending to an elderly relative at the hospital when a ward boy asked him to take a metallic oxygen cylinder inside the MRI room.
“When we told him that metallic things aren’t allowed inside an MRI room, he said ‘sab chalta hai, hamara roz ka kaam hai‘ (it’s okay, we do it every day). He also said that the machine was switched off. The doctor as well as the technician didn’t say anything,” said Harish Solanki, Maru’s relative, who was present at the hospital.
“As soon as he entered with the cylinder, it turned out that the machine was on,” Solanki said. A strong magnetic field pulled the oxygen cylinder towards it along with the man, eyewitnesses described.
His hand got stuck in the machine along with the cylinder, triggering a massive oxygen leak.
When Solanki and the ward boys pulled Maru out of the machine, his body had swollen and he was bleeding profusely. They rushed him to the emergency ward but he died soon after.
A police case has been registered against the doctor, ward boy and ward attendant for causing death by negligence.
Dr Siddhant Shah and ward boy Vitthal Chavan have been arrested.
