US Gymnastics Doctor sentenced to further 40-125 years in prison
Tuesday, February 6th, 2018 10:38:51 by fatimaarshadLarry Nassar, the former US Gymnastics doctor who sexually abused his patients under the guise of treating them, has been given a further sentence of 40 to 125 years in prison after more women came forward accusing him of these crimes.
Nassar was already facing a lifetime behind bars for two prior sentences after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting women and girls in his role as a sports medicine doctor at US Gymnastics and at Michigan State University clinic. This latest sentencing comes from abuse that he had committed at the Twistars gymnastics training center in Michigan.
Victims at the hearing said that they were referred to Nassar for treatment and were molested instead.
“This now ends the criminal legal proceedings involving Larry Nassar. I realise that it does not end the emotional and physical suffering he has caused,” Judge Janice Cunningham said in a Charlotte, Michigan courtroom after imposing the maximum sentence under a plea agreement.
On a previous occasion, Nassar had been sentenced to 60 years in prison on child pornography possession charges and up to 175 years in prison on sexual abuse charges in January. Till date, 265 women have accused the doctor of molesting them. These women include; olympians, gymnasts and collegiate athletes.
The case has raised many questions including how a person was able to abuse so many women for such a long time, undetected. All the victims and their families who spoke at the hearing revealed instances of years of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, suicide attempts and unhealed bodies due to substandard care.
