Indian rape victim gives birth to baby girl

An 11-year-old Indian girl, who was allegedly raped by six people, gave birth to a baby girl in the city of Rajkot on Saturday. The girl was allegedly raped on multiple occasions and she eventually got pregnant by one of the suspects.

According to the hospital reports, the mother’s condition is stable while the newborn baby suffered from some health complications.

“The victim’s condition is stable. The newborn baby had some health problems and has been admitted to a government-run children’s hospital,” a police official said. The girl was eight months pregnant, which means that the baby was born prematurely.

All the suspects have been arrested but the arrests came at different times. Nanji Javiya, 67, and Arvind Kubawat, 60, were arrested in the case on March 13 on the basis of a complaint lodged by the victim’s mother. Investigations revealed that a total of six persons had raped the girl on separate occasions, police said.

Vijanand Ahir, who is visually impaired, and a 17-year-old boy were arrested two days ago, while Vipul Chavda, 40, and Govind Sakariya, 61, were arrested on Saturday, according to police officials.

Incidents of rape and assault against women are rampant in India and even in urban areas, women do not feel safe on the streets.

Last year, a 10-year-old girl was raped several times allegedly by an uncle, who was later arrested. The victim’s family had appealed to the Indian Supreme Court to grant the girl permission for a late abortion, but the plea was turned down.
